Ethanol as an alternative to petroleum
The reading puts forward certain reasons against the idea of adopting ethanol as an alternative to gasoline. But, on the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on these claims and finds them unconvincing.
Firstly, the author asserts that burning ethanol produces carbon dioxide gas similar to gasoline, so it wouldn't help in subsidizing the process of global warming. However, the lecturer says that the carbon dioxide gas produced will be utilized by a greater number of plants that will be grown for the purpose of producing ethanol.
The second argument of the author is that the production of ethanol will require a large quantity of corn, which will decrease its availability for farm animals. The lecturer challenges this argument by stating that ethanol can be produced from any part of a plant containing cellulose, and animals do not eat these parts.
Finally, the author mentions that ethanol cannot compete with gasoline in terms of price, because currently they both have the same price, but it is due to the subsidies provided by the government; otherwise, its price would have been much higher. The lecturer refutes this point and states that if gasoline will be replaced by ethanol, then production of ethanol will be increased, and consequently its price will be lowered.
