Do small children learn more quickly than adults?
It is widely accepted that children are quick learners than adults. However, I feel that it depend on various factors like motivation, need, interest and so on. If adults fulfill these criterias, they can also become fast learners.
Undoubtedly, children seem to learn very quickly. Childrens’ brains have a natural ability to absorb new information as part of their developmental process. However, much of their achievements are because of the social pressure. Additionally, they may be under the stress of necessity or mere interest. Schools compel them to learn many subjects, parents oblige them to practice new sports or music and playmates motivate them to become better at computer games. All these demands make them excel at new skills fast. For instance, children become brilliant in academics due to parental pressure, and excellent in exta-curricular activities because of peer pressure.
Apparently, adults are supposed to be poor learners. However, I disagree with those who affirm that adults cannot learn quickly. Adults already developed more skills to compensate the declining ability of their brain to grasp and remember new things. They can organize their learning by setting time for reading and practice. As ‘practice make us perfect’, through repeat practice, adults can overcome the decreasing ability of brain. Furthermore, the motivation of an adult is often higher than a child. The new skills, language, sports, games, whatever it is grown up people needs it as a part of their prosperity. Inevitably, they have determination than children. For instance, people who wants to migrate to an another country, learn the first language of that country, by using all possible sources, like language coaching, books, internet and so on and become fluent sometime faster than a child.
In conclusion, adults also can prove as fast learners it they have determination, hard work and motivation. World is changing very fast. I feel, to adapt with the changing needs of the world, it is better both child and adult to adapt with it as quicker as possible.
