Cloud seeding
The reading suggests certain evidence to prove that cloud seeding is an effective solution to prevent damage to crops by hail. But the lecturer completely refutes the claims made by the author.
First, the author mentions that laboratory experiments prove that silver iodide can be used to produce snow instead of hail. However, the lecturer points out that, in actual conditions, the silver iodide can even cause no precipitation at all. So the crops would have to face water stress due to droughts. Second, the reading suggests that seed clouding has been successful in controlling hail in urban areas of several Asian countries. The lecturer's stance is that urban areas have higher levels of pollutants, which can make it easier for cloud seeding to work there. He goes on to say that it isn't necessary that this will produce the same results in the fields of the United States. Finally, the author puts forward that crop damage was directly monitored in regions of the central US, and the study proposes this technique to be useful there. The lecturer challenges this argument of the author and holds that when this study was being conducted, all the local surrounding areas experienced lower hail. This might be due to the local conditions there, so that's why the results are unlikely to be reliable.
