The reading and the lecture are both about whether or not an employee should work a four-day week instead of five days per week. While the author of the article argues that there are much more advantages in four-day week selection, the lecturer disputes the claims mentioned in the article. His position is that working four day a week would worsen the situation rather than an improvising.
According to the reading, decrease weekday at work results an increase in company profits. Having more time for life activities, employees will be more satisfied. Hence, they will work more efficiently. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that if company allows their employees to work 4 days per week, it will be more costly. As both reading and lecturer agree on increase of company staffs, this makes the company spend more money for new workers as their training, medical fees. Additionally, he points out that it will cost company more on office space and required devices.
Secondly, the author suggests there will be a lower in unemployment rate. The more employees choose work in 4 days the more human resource company needed to fill the workload. The lecturer, however, asserts that the decreasement in work time prevents advancing of employee in work. Who chooses to spend more time at work are likely to be able to propose to be a management. He goes on that this put four-day week worker in bad position when crisis occurs.
Finally, the authors put forth the idea that employee will feel happier. Staff who works less time per week is able to spend more time on their personal life's aspects. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is company might require their staff to work overtime to make up for workload requirements.
