The reading and the lecture are both about the function of the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. While the author of the article argues that there might be three possibilities of how the building was used, the lecturer disputes all the arguments in the article.
According to the reading, the building might be used to be residential. The article mentions that it has the same look as a well-known apartment building which was a host for many people. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the inside of the building shows only few fireplaces. He states that a building for hundreds of people should reveal the evidence of many fireplaces for many families.
Secondly, the author suggests that the great size of the building can be a suitable place for storing food. The article notes that this characteristic is fitting to the features of Chaco people's main crops. The lecturer, however, notes that there is not any convincing evidence. He goes on to say that the building yields no trace of containers for food.
Finally, the author put forth the idea that Chaco Canyon was used to be a serve as a ceremonial place. The author adds that there is another next-to building shows evidence of broken pot, which can be deprived that they were used for eating festive meal. In contrast, the lecturer stance is the nearby building also has some evidence of construction remained. Hence, it is more likely that the pots found were belong to the construction workers at there.
