TOEFL T P O 07 Integrated Writing Task

The reading and the lecture are both about the necessary of ecocertification for American wood companies. While the lecture of the article dismisses the important of this certification, the lecturer disputes the claims mentioned in the article.

According to the reading, it is true to say that American consumers might not value ecological certification label due to excess in advertising. The article mentions that American consumers are no longer put their trust in advertising claims. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that US consumers do not treat goods as the same because of their independent interests. Therefore, it is the fact that there will be a huge amount of buyers finding ecologically certificated products worthy.

Secondly, the author suggests in order to be certified as an eco-friendly business, company has to spend more money. Hence, it creates an upwards in price which might observe a downward in number of customers. The lecturer, however, notes that price only is counted to buying decision if it changes largely and abruptly. When the different is smaller than 5%, other factors will come to the mind of customer. Hence, this is the case of price change if a company is willing to have ecocertification.

Finally, the author put forth the idea that it is nonsense to say that not being verified as economical company put its products behind foreign ecofriendly opponents. The article explains that American companies distribute their products mostly in national market, thus, they do not have to worry about that problem. In contrast, the lecturer stance is the competition between ecologically recognized and unrecognized is still remained in US. He says that American companies is left behind when it comes to compare with imported products that has ecological cetification.
