The reading and the lecture are both about the reason for the extinction of sea cows. While the author of the article argues that three reasons why the sea cows extinct, the lecture disputes the claims presented in the article.
According to the reading, the first theory is over-hunted by Siberian people. The article mentions that sea cows are a good source of food, so it is possible that Siberian people eat it. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that it is hard for Siberian people to eat all of that. Additionally, he points out that sea cows are too big and Siberian people’s population is not very big, so it is impossible.
Secondly, the author suggests that during that time the ecosystem had disturbance. The article notes that their main food, Kelp, declined so it led them to die. The lecturer, however, asserts that it is not a reason for food. He goes on to say that whales also had their food affected by the ecosystem, but they did not decline.
Finally, the author puts forth the idea that fur traders are the main reason. The author contends that they can easily kill large numbers of sea cows. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance is that the date is incorrect. He says that before tur traders came to the island the sea cows had already declined.
