The graph compares employment rates in three sectors of the economy, in the UK, 2000-2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph illustrates data about the percentage of hired people in the UK economy, namely public sector, private sector and self-employed, over a decade period from 2000 to 2010.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is that the employment rate in the private sector witnessed a significant downward trend, while there were upward trends in the public and self-employed sector over the period in question.
Looking at the details, as regards the private sector, the percentage started at under 50% in 2000. After that, there was a remarkable decline to approximately 8% in 2002, before levelling off in the following year. At this point, the employment rate halved in the period between 2003 and 2009 and then the figure hit the trough of 20% in the last year.
With respect to the self-employed sector, the proportion remained stable over the first three years. Despite a considerable decrease from nearly 38% in 2003 to just under 50% in 2005, the figure then reduced gradually by 5% in 2006. Subsequently, there was a steady increase, finishing at well over 50%. Regarding the self-employed sector, the trend was similar. The employment rate climbed slightly between 2000 and 2002, before dropping to the same rate in the beginning. Following this, there was a substantial rise to 30% in the final year.
