Overall, the proportion of the population over 65 increased over the period shown, the reverse was true for age groups from 0 to 14 and 25 to 64. Most notably, although age demographics from 25-64 experienced a downward trend, this figure still ranked first throughout the period.
Looking at the chart in more detail, in 1960, the proportion of people aged 25-64 in Japan was highest with about 65%. The figures for age groups from 0-14 and over 65 were much lower, at about 30% and 5%, respectively. In 2020, the aging population over 65 in Japan rose substantially to 30%, the opposite was true for the population aged 0-14 and 25-64, reaching 15% and 60%, respectively.
By 2040, the population aged 25-64 was predicted to decrease marginally to approximately 58%, whereas the same trend was observed in the figure for youngsters, reaching 10%. In comparison, the rate of population aged over 65 was forecasted to increase slightly to 35%.
