Write about the following topic:
In the future, nobody will buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Thanks to technology development, the section for online reading materials flourishes across numerous societies. Within such a dramatic flourishment, some e-books or e-newspapers offer online users with free access- the comfort most traditional materials cannot supply to their readers. This in turn leads to the prediction about online newspapers and books as the complete alternate for the printed counterpart, to which I am strongly opposed. The essay below will give reasons for the author’s personal viewpoint, providing any relevant examples from their own knowledge.
To begin with, there are two major reasons to demonstrate the given idea as a misconception, including the fact that not all online newspapers companies can abolish fees for full access to their resources. Accordingly, many worldwide-acclaimed organisations even require a subscription plan, with which premium users have an advantage over non-subscribers for full access to the reading resources. Take the case of The Economist - a renowned newspaper company - as an example, where a wide range of its latest articles have to be purchased with a price ranging from $15 to $25 for each. Besides the mentioned financial loss, risks of disqualification should be included as another drawback. In fact, most articles and books published officially must have been undergone a series of stages to be assessed by the publishing authorities. Contradictorily, qualification for materials on the Internet is not as tightened, in which most resources, even those with inappropriate contents, can be uploaded on various websites, thus leaving readers unprotected from unsafe reading contents. The two mentioned disadvantages clearly reach the suggestion that books and newspapers on virtual mediums should not be the optimal choice for reading.
Furthermore, there are certain factors to motivate the popularity of traditional reading resources. One of these is effective avoidance of disturbances, as people are not posed with constant distractions that appear in the form of advertisements or message notifications from the social mediums. This might enhance concentration on the current reading contents to its maximum level, subsequently ensuring readers the best experience of book accessing. Additionally, for certain personal purposes, such as book collecting, materials in the physical form can appropriately meet these demands from purchasers. This is due to a more growing scarcity of physical books and newspapers, as the same reading resources can be approached online. The situation hence raises prices for physical books, even with several of these products no longer introduced to the public both physically and virtually. Collecting physical books and articles is therefore considered a suitable choice to attain benefits in advance of economics and resource access.
In conclusion, given the factors above, it is clearly admitted that online books and articles will not entirely replace the traditional counterparts. In the future, as the society develops, the decision to buy physical reading resources will be still as popular as that at precedented time.
