Read the passage, and then listen to the lecture. After that, write a complete response to explain how the professor casts doubt on the reading passage.
Both the article and the lecturer discuss the cause of crimes. On one hand, the article argues that crimes than be attributed to poverty, race, the size of the population and its people. On the other hand, the lecturer shows evidence to disclaim the argument of the reading.
First and foremost, the reading claims that poverty is one of the causes of crimes. Poor people living in such bad condition that they feel that they don’t have the responsibility to the community. However, the professor refutes this points by saying that crimes rate isn’t related to poverty at all. He gives the example that in the US, even when the economy is flourishing and employment is ensured, crimes rate goes up. The other side of the coin is that when its economy is bad and many people are unemployed, crimes rate decrease.
Furthermore, the article posits that race has a close relation to criminal behaviors. For instance, it states that the blacks, in fact, commit much more crimes than the whites. Nonetheless, the professor shows his opposition to this claim. According to the professor, crimes are more liable to be caused by black people because there are more broken families in such a community.
Last but not least, the reading indicates that the size and the proportion of the population plays an important role in making crimes prevalent. The author explains that the bigger the population is, the more likely it will be prone to crimes and he claims that if there are more men and teens in a society, the crime rates in which will, more or less, increase. In contrast, the professor rebuts this point by inferring that criminal behaviors are affected by childhood’s terrible memory. He says that the children will be more likely to commit crimes if they are abandoned or live without their parents’ affection.
