three possible theories about the purpose and meaning of the carves stone balls
The reading material claims three possible theories about the purpose and meaning of the carves stone balls, while the speaker asserts that none of these theories are convincing.
Firstly, the writer states, due to the holes in the balls and grooves on the surfaces, the carves stone balls might be used as weapons for hunting or fighting. The lecturer refutes this weak argument, mentioning that if these balls had been used as weapons, they should have been pieces of scattered in wars when we find them today. However, the fact is that the carved stone balls were well preserved and they were not damaged before.
Another important point made in the passage is that the balls could be used as part of a primitive complex of weights and measures. The professor does not think this argument hold water tightly. According to her, the masses of these balls were not uniform at all. Actually, The balls were made up of different types of stones, like sandstones; therefore the density of the balls was variable. In other words, the weight of the balls themselves was not the same. So the carved stone balls cannot be the standard unit of measure.
Finally, the author believes that the balls might serve as a social purpose. The professor casts doubt on this point. According to her, most of balls had too simple designs; only a few of them had intricate designs. And it is confirmed that when a high ranking man dead, he would bring some possessions with him to the grave; therefore, if the balls had been the symbols of high social status, they should have been found in graves. Conversely, people today cannot find any carved stone ball in the graves.
