In the given set of material, the author describes that the Zebra mussel fish is spreading rapidly in North America which is lethal for other fresh water fish and it give reasons that shows that there are no ways to control its spread. However, the lecturer in the follow-up material cast doubts on those reasons and tells that it is possible to control its spread.
First, the author states that the mussel fish is carried by ships from Europe to North America in ballast water and thus it will soon spread everywhere. In contrast, the professor refutes this point and explains that nowadays there are effective ways to control its spread unlike past. The ships carry ballast water from Europe and empty it in ocean water and this fish gets killed in salt water. Therefore, it is possible to control its spread done by ships.
Second, the reading suggests that the mussel fish dominates the area as they are strong and reproduces rapidly. Also, they do not have predators to eat them. The speaker rebuts this point and tells that the local birds discover the new prey quickly and change their eating habits. These birds eat mussel fish in large amounts and thus do not allow their number to increase to a great extent.
Third, the passage depicts that mussel fish will lead to decline in the population of all the fresh water fishes as they will compete with them for food. Conversely, the professor opposes this argument by narrating that though the fishes that are dependent on planktons will decrease in number. But other fishes that live at the bottom of the habitat will increase in number and so the overall population will not get affected as mentioned in the passage.
