The article discusses a serious topic relating to the decline of toreyya and provides three reason of support to prevent the decline. However, the professor explains that none of the reasons provide satisfactory solution and opposes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading passage discusses that planting the torreya plant in the places where it used to be i.e in coolest and dampest place will prevent its decline. In contrast , the professor provides information that climate of the coolest and dampest places is affected by the change in climate in larger area. This change can be attriibuted to the increase in global warming or to the reason that wet land throughout the florida is drained. Therefore it is difficult for the toreyya in thes areas. Clearly a disparity exists between the article and the evidence exhibited by the professor. As a result, we can safely assume that planting toreyya in the previous locations will not improve its number.
Second, the article pushes forth the idea that by moving the toreyya to an entirely different locations, far from its florida microclimate will increase the population of toreyya. However, the speaker give the example of black locus plant which was moved to north. The effect of this movement was that it killed other trees or plants. He also states that it has unpredictable results. Consequently, we can argue that the claim made in the passage has unbearable results.
Finally, the reading posits that by preserving the toreyya in a closely monitored environment ie. in research centres, we can counter the problem. The professor refutes this point by explaining that research doesnot give the proper solution to this problem. He mentions that when torreya is put in reaserach centres, it cannot survive the diseases that are caused by the fact that there is lack of genetically diverse species.
In summary, while both passage and lecture provides interesting information regarding to the decline in numbers of toreyya , a significant amount of evidence supports that the methods mentioned in the passage doesnot clearly provide the ways to control the decline in numbers of toreyya. Therefore, the passage fails to justify the methods of preventing the ddecline of torreya.
