Although facts are important to be learned by student, understanding the ideas and concepts are more important and preferable. Some people agree with this statement and others disagree. Personally, I believe that knowing ideas and concepts make us learn facts more easily for three important reasons.
First, understanding ideas and concepts will open our minds and let us think more clearly. For example, yesterday I was helping my elementary school son in his math homework. He always try to solve problems without showing up his work, as a results he had a lot of mistakes. So he and I tried to understand the concepts first and then it was clear to us to learn the facts.
Second, facts are easily found everywhere but ideas and concept must be learned. For instance, when you are looking for specific topic, you can just type it on any of the Internet web. You will find a lot of topics with different concepts about what you were looking for. In addition, there are a lot of text books where you can find many facts of interest. In the other hand you have to think and try to discover by yourself the ideas and concepts of any facts.
Finally, understanding ideas and concepts make us learn the fact more easily and never forget it. Also, facts will be more acceptable. For example, I remembered when I was at school and have to memorize some science equations. It was so hard to me to remember all the symbols and numbers. But after I tried to understand every symbol and how it is related to the number, I never forgot it.
In conclusion, facts, ideas, and concepts are always important in any study. But I definitely believe that students have to understand ideas and concepts first then it will be more easily for them to learn facts.
