The reading passage claims that in 1768 the sea cows became extinct. There are several reasons which support that why they were extinct. However, the lecturer casts serious doubts on this claim by presenting some counter-arguments and examples. He believes that these proofs are not convincing for this extinction.
On the first place, The lecturer contends that sea cows had the massive creature, therefore they were enough enormous that couple of them feed all of the Siberian people who do not have the large population. So Siberian people did not need to hunt lots of them. This, however, is contradicted to the reading passage mentions that the sea cows may have been overhunted by groups of native Siberian people.
On the other hand, it is noted in the passage that the sea cow population may have become extinct because of ecosystems disturbances that caused a decline in their main source of food, kelp. In contrast, he clearly states that if any drastic changes happened, it had to effect on all of the marine animals not just kelp populations, in addition, there was no report about the decrease in kelp population, thus sea cows never felt food shortage during their lives.
Finally, the speaker points out that sea cows became extinct soon after the European arrived though before this evidence their populations were already quite small, hence there was another issue that influences on their lives. Nonetheless, the text asserts that the main cause of extinction of the sea cows could have been European fur traders who come to the island after 1741.
