Both the reading and lecture are about a mass-extinction which its date returns at the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago. Under this event, a huge number of species was eliminated in a short period of time. The reading provides three theories for this occurrence and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading proposes that since sea level had declined in the Triassic era; hence, it could have had negative impacts on the populations that were living in shallow water or near coastal regions. This point is rebutted by the professor. She claims that researchers believes that the level sea can fluctuate gradually, so in such a condition the coastal areas can adapt to this change; consequently, since this fluctuation was quite gradually, it took million years thus coastal habitats could accept this circumstance.
Secondly, the article declares that in the Triassic era, the volcanic eruptions may have released sulfur dioxide to air and this may have caused to global temperature get cool and in such a horrible situation, species could not have survived; in the contrast, the professor contends that Volcanic eruptions fail alter the temperature in a short time. She elaborates on this by mentioning that SO2 doesn't stay at atmosphere for a long time because it will combine with the water in the air and then it will return on the ground as acid rain.
Finally, the reading passage states that an Asteroid may have struck to ground then the its debris -due to this strike- could have remained in the atmosphere for a long time and blocked the sunlight for few years. This argument is challenged by the lecturer again. The professor expresses that we would not find any site related to an asteroid on the Earth. The only found evidence is a site which its date returns 12 million years ago, so this theory also fails.
