The only way to reduce the amount of traffic in cities today is by reducing the need for people to travel from home for work, education or shopping.
It is certainly true that the major problem which cities now are facing with is traffic, the result of the increasing volume of vehicles on the streets. Although reducing the demand of people’s daily routine for work, education or shopping could prevent traffic, it seems to me that this is not the sole solution to arrest this issue.
Thanks to the Internet, the incredible technology development of human, people no more face geographical and time barriers as they used to in the previous eras. A businessman, for instance, could run his business, communicate with partners in other counterparts without being at a far-away location or different time zone. Likewise, with interacting teaching, students do not need to attend class in the lecture hall but still acquire full knowledge. Simultaneously, online shopping offers a variety of choices for customers. In other words, without having people travel to fulfill their demand, the application of this technology has put a good impact on traffic matters.
Nevertheless, the lack of freedom and social communication are its noticeable drawbacks. In addition, there have been others practical methods potentially addressing the traffic-related issue recently. The use of public transport provides a typical example. If the cities’ authorities enhance the use of buses, trains or the development of not road based transport such as sky trams or subways, instead of private vehicles, not only will the traffic congestion be dealt but also people will still be capable of sustaining their social interaction as usual.
In conclusion, I admit the importance of decreasing the need for traveling from home to workplace, schools, and shops to solve the current traffic situation. Besides, I do think that there are more acceptable alternative measures to reduce jams on the roads.
