The author believes that zerba mussel, which is native to Eastern Europe, will soon be spreaded to North America in which it poses a threat to freshwater fish species, and cessation of its population growth is not possible. The lecturer, however, has the opposite point of view. He explains why the author is not right about his points.
First, the author states that zebra mussels are transfered to America using "ballast water" of ships with which ships balance their cargo. For this reason they will soon dominate the area. On the otherhand, the lecturer counters the author's claim by asserting that zebra mussels are killed in salt water, thus, if ships release their "ballast water" in the ocean no zebra mussels will be moved to fresh waters of North America.
Second, the author claims that not only zebra mussels are durable species and have high rates of reproduction but they also have no predators in their new habitat. Therefore, they are likely to dominate their new habitat. The lecturer, refutes this argument by proposing that after some time, birds are likely to indentify zebra mussels as a consumable species, just like they did in Europe, and they will start consuming them in large numbers.
Finally, the author contends that zebra mussels will compete with fish species whose food is planktons, providing that they are also plankton eaters. On the contrary, the lecturer opposes author's contention by arguing that although zebra mussels will compete with plankton eating fish species, they produce nutrients which will help bottom eating fish species thrive.
