TPO 48 (integrated)_storing medical information
The article states that storing medical information about patients in electronic database has several advantages over traditional record keeping and describes three of the advantages. However, the professor explains that the mentioned benefits in the article are uncertain and refutes each of the three benefits.
First, the reading states that electronic records can reduce costs by saving money on elimination of paper records. In contrary, the lecturer refutes this point by stating that the elimination of papers has not significant effect on costs. She explains that a lot of doctors don't throw out the paper records and keep them as a backup. Also the professor states that signature of doctors is needed for future demands.
Second, the article claims that electronic records can reduce the chance of medical errors. In contrast, the professor opposes this point by saying that most of the doctors still use papers and office staffs transfers the handwritings to electronic formats. So in this process the errors will remain.
Third, the reading passage holds the view that electronic database of patient's medical records can aid medical research. However, the professor casts doubt over this view and contends that electronic records would not provide benefits for researchers. She states that access to medical records is difficult because of strict privacy law in the United States and scientists have to get allowance from patients and follow the strict and limitation in this regard.
Overall, while the passage brings three benefits to support the use of electronic records of medical information, the lecture prefers to differ by providing counter arguments.
