The reading passage suggests three possible theories that caused the extinction of Steller’s sea cow, while the lecture disagrees with them.
First, the author suggests that sea cows were over hunted by native Siberian people. However, the lecturer disputes this statement by pointing out that a sea cow is extremly massive. A villiage of Sibreian people could feed on a sea cow for a month. Therefore, Siberian people had no reason to hunt lots of them.
Secondly, the reading passage shows that the disturbances of ecosystems led to the decline of kelp which was the main prey of sea cow. Consequently, sea cows died because of no food and became extinct. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that kelp should not be the only one marine animal that was effected by the change of ecosystems. The lecturer provides the evidence that the number of whales which also lived there did not decrease which supports the lecturer's idea.
Last but not the least, the writer claims that fur traders which equipped with weapons from Europe kill abundant sea cows. Nevertheless, the lecturer disputes that there is a strong evidence proves the number of sea cows dropped drematically before 1700 which long before the Europens came.
In conclusion, the lecturer proposes some solid and vivid statements to challenge the theroies of the extinction of sea cows that the writer provides.
