TPO 10: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made reading passage.
The article states that the sea otter of Alaskan coast is declining because of environmental pollution and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that attacks by predators is the main reason of otter population's declination and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the article claims that there are known source of pollution along the Alaskan coast which confirms pollution is the more likely cause of declining population of otters. The professor refutes this point by saying that pollution is not the main cause of this phenomenon. she states that there is no dead body of otters in Alaska beaches. This observation is consistent with the predation theory, because if the otters are killed by predators, they are eaten immediately and as a result there will not be any wash up along the beach.
Second, the article posits that declining of other animal's population shows that population is the cause, because pollution affects the entire ecosystem. However, the professor says that orcas hunt whales and whale disappear because of human hunters. So orcas are obliged to eat other species. As a result, orcas are causing the decline of all the sea mammals.
Third, the reading says that uneven pattern of otter decline is explained by the uneven concentration of pollutant along the Alaskan coast because of ocean currents or other environmental factors. The professor opposes this point by explaining that uneven pattern of otter decline is better explained by predation theory than pollution theory. She says that it depends on otters' location. If the location is accessible to orcas, the otters' population will decline. She also mentions that orcas are large and they cannot access shallow or rocky locations. As a result, otter is not declined there.
