Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the possibility of the issue whether or not humpback whales navigate by stars. Albeit the author provides three reasons of support to advocate humpback whales' ability to navigate by stars, the lecturer challenges all the evidences and refutes them all.
First of all, the author points to humpback whales' high intelligence to support their ability to use a complicated system for orientation. However, the lecturer believes intelligence has nothing to do with navigation by stars and is irrelevent. For instance, dock, a bird of an average intelligence, is able to navigate by stars. Thus a complex brain does not necessarily associate with this ability. It is just an ability that some animals instinctively are born with.
Second, according to the author, as humpback whales migrate in straight lines they must orient themselves by an external force. Since humpback whales can not rely on land features, like birds to be oriented, it is stars at night helping them stay oriented. Yet, the lecturer disagrees, and points to the bio-magnet in humpback whales' brain helping them stay oriented by the earth's magnetic field.
Finally, the author mentions the strange behavior in humpback whales with heads above the water which seems like they are looking upward seeking for stars. Yet, the lecturer states the issue doesn't work, since some other animals such as sharks have the same behavior, but they are in search of prey. In addition, the author misses the point that humpback whales might demonstrate this behavior also in daylight when stars are not visible. In conclusion, reasons to support humpback whales ability to navigate by stars does not work, and even though is fascinating, is a pure speculation and nothing more.
