The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given graph illustrates the information about how many goods were transported in the UK over a twenty-eight year period from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, it can be seen that the road transportation was the most preferred route and the pipeline remained the least popular choice throughout the period in the question.
As regards, road and pipeline transportations, in 1974, they stood at approximately 70 and 5 million tonnes respectively. While the road transportation experienced some fluctuations until 1994, pipeline saw a gradual growth to roughly around 18 million tonnes from 1974 to 1982. Despite the variation, there was then a sharp rise in the road transportation, finishing the final year at around 100 million tonnes. However, for pipeline, the transportation remained stable at around 18 million tonnes from 1982 to 1992. Subsequently, the amount of goods rose over the next two years (1994), at which point the number levelled off at just over 20 million tonnes for the remaining term.
As for water and rail transportations in 1974, both of them began at a virtually similar level of between 39 and 40 million tonnes. But from 1978, both of them followed opposite trends. Even though the transportation via water increased, the amount failed to overcome 60 million tonnes for a considerable period (1978-2000). Ultimately, the total increased rapidly to 62 million tonnes in 2002. Regarding the rail transportation, having experienced a substantial decline down to 1994, after that the amount went up to 40 million tonnes, which was exactly similar to 1974.
