The professor in the lecture raises strong doubt over reading passage arguments and he says the evidence supporting humpback whales migrate are inconvenient.
At the beginning of the lecture the professor says, there is not real connection between intelligent and using stars to navigation. Some birds with average cognitive using stars to find their migrate way. Ducks for instance use stars to navigate but, they are not very smart, they have average general cognitive. They do this instictly. This directly refutes the reading passage which states that because humpback whales has well- developed cognitive ability they can use stars to navigate.
Then the lecturer says, what makes animals able to migrate is straight lines is external forces. Humpback whales has bio-magnetite structure in their brain and it is sensitive to earth magnetic field. accordingly, they use earth magnetic field for oriantaion rather than stars to migrate in straight lines. Again, this refutes what is stated in the reading paragraph which stated that humpbak whales rely on stars at night to provide them with external signs by which to maintain direction over long distance in staright lines.
Finally he points out that, however floating straight up is rare, but other animals such as sharks do the same. As we know sharks do not migrate, they just do that to look for animals they want to hunt. Not only that but humpback whale do this work during day, hence it is not possible they floating straight up to see stars because and they cannot see stars in day. The reading passage on the other hand posits that, floating straight up behaviour provide humpbaack whales with information to navigate by.
