Essay topics:

To what extent is the use of animals acceptable in scientific research

Animal testing for scientific research is controversial. On one side, animal rights activists argue that it is cruel and inhuman to use defenseles animals to test drugs and cosmetics. On the other side, scientists point out that animal testing is the only way to discover if a drug or a cosmetic is safe for us. But to what extent is the use of animals acceptable in scientific research?

Animals should be allowed to live freely and no one should take that away from them.
Many people fight every day against animal testing. They argue that animals are mistreated: force-fed, deprived of food and water or injured in several ways. In 2016 the United States Department of Agriculture published a study revealing that 820’812 animals suffered pain during testing and weren't given anesthesia. They included primates, cats, dogs, rabbits, pigs, hamsters.
An alternative to animal testing could be in vitro testing, which consists in analyzing cells through glass equipment. It could be even more effective than animal testing, since you could directly analyze human cells. In addition, in vitro experiments would be less expensive.
Animals and humans may have different reactions to the same chemical.
According to Understanding Animal Research, a not-for-profit organization in the UK, 94 % of the drugs that were successful through animal testing failed in human clinical trials. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) in 2013, found that 150 human tests for drugs supposed to reduce inflammation all failed although they were successful in animal tests.

On the other hand, thanks to animal testing, new drugs have been developed against important diseases, such as malaria, smallpox, polio and tuberculosis. Animal testing also brought an important progress in the research against breast cancer and brain injuries.
To protect animals, laws have been put in place. The Animal Welfare Act regulates animal research since 1966 in the United States. They organize special and regular inspections in research laboratories by veterinarians.
Animal research is one of the rare ways to find out if a drug is safe or not. Furthermore, animals have a very similar genetic structure to humans.
Finally, animals can sometimes even benefit from testing. If vaccines hadn’t been tested on animals, millions of them would have died from distemper, tetanus, anthrax and many more terrible viruses.

In conclusion, animal testing has to be used only if there is no other solution left. Animals are living beings and not commodities.
