Integrated Essay 1 on Chevalier
Reading and lecture discusses about validity of events and stories depicted in the memoir created by Chevalier. Reading states that Chevalier may have added interesting stories in his memoir to allure people. While, lecture argues that his memoir was guenuine and based on true stories.
First, reading states that Chevalier was addicted to game and parties and also borrowed money from other swiss merchant. Reading points out that if he was affluent there was no need for him to acquire money. Lecture casts doubt on
this statement made in reading. He argues that Chevalier owned numerous properties and was wealthy. Furthermore, she points out that he sold some of his properties and it took time to get his money.
Second, reading mentions that there was no way that Chevalier could have remembered each and every word from famous writer Voltaire. So, he claims that information written in memoir was doubtful. In contrary, lecture refutes that by saying that Chevalier used to write all detail about his conversation with writer in his journal. As a result, events presented in memoir was original.
Third, reading claims that Chevalier must have bribed other prisoners to help in breaking through jail. It was evidenced by the hole in the ceiling created by metal rod. On the other hand, lecture states that he escaped via ceiling as he mentioned, but there was no evidence that he bribed other prisoners. In addition, she points that other prisoners were stronger than him and still they did not bribe. As a consequence, lecture successfully casts doubt on points made in reading.
