The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The graph provides information about the increasing percentage of 65 and over aged people in Japan, Sweden and the USA.
Overall, it indicates that, the population of senior citizen, in all three different countries is expected to reach over 25% in 2040. Since 1940 to 2000, Sweden and the USA had a similar figure. From there, both were divided in different way. Around 2030 to 2040 again these will have same pattern to grasp 25%. Moreover, between 1940 to about 2017 Japan had been shown under 5% ratio, although will gradually go up in 2030, which will significantly raise and hit to almost 27% in 2040.
In 1940, the proportion of people aged 65 or more stood at 5% in Japan, approximately 7% in Sweden and almost 9% in the USA. While the percentage for the western countries grew to around 15% in about 1990, the pattern for Japan dipped to 2.5% before rising to more than 5% at the present year (2018).
From 2020 to 2030, in Japan elderly people population will steadily grow but percentage will rapidly go up to 25%. In comparison, Sweden and the USA will show quite less ratio ( more or less 25%) in 2040.
