Based on the reading material, it is stated that there are 3 viable hypotheses regarding why Steller's sea cows became extinct in the 1768. However, the lecturer finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and presents some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that sea cows may have been extincted due to overhunting by Siberian people, who hunted these animals owing to the fact that they were a good source of food. That being said, the lecturer repudiated this idea by clarifying that Steller's sea cow was among of huge animals. They were massive with hundreds of tons. A couple of them were enough for Siberian people to catch food in harsh environment and as a result, there was no need to overhunting. So, overhunting is not the cause of extinction.
Another reason mentioned by the author was that these animals were extincted because of ecosystems disturbances, which caused a decline in kelp population that was the source of food for sea cows. However, the lecturer rejected this one too by stating that if ecosystems disturbances were the cause of decline in kelp population, other marine animals like whales became extinct too owing to the fact that these animals are relied on kelp either. However, there is no record for extinction of whales in 1768. Hence, ecosystems disturbances are not the reason of extinction.
The final point advanced in the reading passage was that sea cows became extinct, because the European fur traders came to the island after 1741 and caught the last sea cow for its fur in 1768. Yet again, the professor casted doubt on this idea. He said that the population of sea cows was quite small before 1700s. These creatures may have been extincted long before the first European fur traders came to the island. Thus, the European are not blame for the extinction and there must be another reason for why these animals became extinct in 1768.
