In 2000, 0-14-years old children made up about a half of Yemen’s total population while they represented for only 14.3% in Italy whose majority of population was distributed by people at the ages of 15-59 (61.6%). Interestingly, elderly people of above 60 accounted for nearly a quarter of population of Italy whereas this group was the lowest among the population age groups of Yemen with a mere 3.6%.
It is anticipated that the working age group (15-59 years) will rise to 57.3% of Yemen’s population in 2050, followed by children and elderly groups with 37% and 5.7% respectively. Meanwhile in Italy, the percentage of elderly people is expected to increase to 42.3% and that of working people will fall down to 46.2% in 2050, making the gap between them smaller.
Overall, most of the population of both countries will be represented by 15-59-years old people in 2050, and the difference between their proportions of the elderly will become wider.
