Mark Zuckerberg rightly said, "The biggest risk in life is not taking risks." The history of human's progress is a strong evidence that bolsters this saying. Success of most of the great businesses is attributed to the risk taking appetite of their founders and employees. Though risks scare most of the people, In reality it is the stability and decision to avoid taking risks, that does more harm.
Many people do argue the need of taking such risks that may prove threatening to one's future, it won't be wrong to say these people are more inclined to stability than ambition. If it is the stability that suits better, risks are undoubtedly gratuitous. Moreover, success can be construed in non financial aspects too. For example, a person who is happy with his stable job and loving family is far more successful than a billionaire who has lost his peace of mind, to the never ending struggle to reach at the pinnacle.
Success is a subjective term and one's interpretation motivates him accordingly. The higher are one's standards of success, more important are risks. Risks should be considered as a means to success, more capable and skillful, one is in taking risks, more likely he is to succeed. For example, consider the biography of great businessmen like Vanderbilt, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, all of them had to take big risks to achieve seemingly unrealistic goals. Sound judgement and careful planning are essential for the success. Had these businessmen taken risks impulsively, we might not have heard about them. Thus, it is not just the risk appetite that makes one successful, it is his temperament and sensibility that complements the trick. Thus, it would be wrong to see risks and careful planning as two contrasting factors, instead it is their combo that is magical in its effects.
In nutshell, one's interpretation of success, his risk appetite and skills to carefully manage and estimate the risks plays a crucial role in his success. Other than these factors, he should have the ability to stay aplomb during failures. Failures are inevitable outcomes of risks but if one is diligent and tenacious, they are eventually going to lead him to success.
