Some people argue that companies and private individuals, not government, should pay the bill of pollution clean up. To what extent do you.
It is true that stakeholders in business sector should pay the bill of pollution clean up. While some people say companies and private individuals are institutions which should pay it, I think government is the side that has responsibility to solve pollution problem.
Industry activity is one of factors that makes earth condition bad. It produces pollution and creates products that can make global warming, such as hair dryer, refrigerator, air conditioner, hair spray, and perfume. In Indonesia, President has created regulation to solve it. He decided rule for companies in order to implement Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as their obligation program. It has purposes to keep environment and help society from uncomfortable condition caused by them. Many kinds of CSR programs that can execute, such as planting trees in large area and cleaning river from rubbish. In my opinion, executing CSR is one of evidences that companies are responsible for environment and they give contribution to government and country.
In any case, President should take action to reduce pollution and pay the bill to fix it. In Indonesia, government get much money from taxpayer such as individual person and corporation. Tax is income resource that is used to fulfill country’s need, such as infrastructure and citizen prosperity. If companies and private individuals have to pay again then they must execute CSR, I think it is very hard for them. Government can determine allocation cost for environment sector from APBN. As a leader, President can make specific rule for CSR regulation. For example, industries have to spend around 60 percent from CSR’s consideration to focus in environment, such as pollution clean up and 40 percent cost allocation to other activities, for instance health, education, and sport.
In conclusion, there are convincing arguments both for and against who should pay the bill of pollution clean up, but I think government is an institution that become the first player to solve it.
