Average distance in miles traveled per person per year, by mode of transportation
The table represents the mobility of citizens using different types of transportation, and it is measured by distance in miles each person per year between 1985 and 2000.
Overall, the total miles traveled by commuters saw an upward trend, while 3 out of 8 modes showed the reverse. During the period given, private transportation was still the most favorable.
Initially, the average distance of car users was by far the highest over a 15-year period, increasing to 4806 miles in 2000. Although the total distance for those who used the local bus and other transportation showing almost similar proportion, the final measurement was far different as the former increased to 585 miles per person and the later halved to 274 miles per person at the end of the period.
Pedestrians and travelers who prefer train started with almost similar level, but train then showed the popularity in the following fifteen years causing the significant increase of traveling to 366 miles. While traveling used taxi and long distance bus doubled in terms of distance reached, the miles traveled by bicycle experienced a steady decrease by 10 miles.
