Average Household Expenditures by Major Categories

The two pie charts compare a country’s 5 major household expenses in years 1950 and 2010. Overall, there were significant changes in the cost of the given categories in both years.

In 1950, nearly three quarters of the total expenditures accounted from housing costs, representing the largest proportion amongst the other categories. However, it dropped remarkably to just less than a quarter after 60 years. Money spent on food was 11.2% of the total expenses on the previous year where it ranked second after housing costs, but it interestingly increased later accounting to 34% of the total household budget on which it constituted the largest figure in 2010.

Other expenses such as health care, education, transportation and the rest represent small figures in 1950 constituting to less than 7% each. Remarkably, health care and other expenses not significantly mentioned grew overtime with roughly 11% and 15% more respectively, while the rest almost remained the same with just 1 to 2.50% increase.

For a period of 60 years, consumer’s budget went mostly to food as the priority, second was housing costs, third was for transportation, fourth for others not mentioned, and the rest for all other expenses on the charts.
