Causes of Worldwide Land Degradation

Essay topics:

Causes of Worldwide Land Degradation

The pie chart shows how worldwide land was damaged and the table presents the proportion of land destructed in three different regions namely, North America, Europe and Oceania in the year 1990.

Looking first at the pie chart, it is evident that the most significant cause of land degradation worldwide was over-grazing, contributing to 35% of total destruction. Next to it was deforestation, which was just 5% below over-grazing. Over-cultivation then presents as the third cause of why agricultural land became less productive in 1990, which was just over a quarter. Lastly, an insignificant number of 7% came from other causes not specifically mentioned.

Now looking at the table above, it presents more detailed pieces of information about the percentage of land by region, affected by the three major land manipulation. Overall, Europe had 23% of its land damaged, having the most area ruined among the three regions, with deforestation as the leading cause of damage. Oceania came next with about 13% of its land harmed having deforestation as the main reason of destruction. Lastly, North America had the least area damaged, with just 5% of their land mostly being over-cultivated.
