The given graph illustrates the portion of citizens living in cities in six parts of the world in 1950, 2007 and a forecast for 2050.

Overall, it is clearly seen that the percentage of people residing in urban areas increased in every part of the Earth and will continue rising in the future. In addition, Europe, North America and Oceania always had more than half of its citizens living in cities, while the urban population of Africa and Asia was considerably less.

The figures for Europe, North America and Oceania stood at 51, 64 and 62 per cent in 1950, respectively. Then there were a rocketing to 72 per cent in Europe, a 15 per cent rise in North America and a moderate growth to 71 per cent in Oceania. According to forecasts, the urban population in these areas will increase slightly on 5-12 per cent. The figures of Latin America and the Caribbean have similar patterns. It began with just over two-fifth in 1950, rose to 76 per cent in 2007 and expected to reach 89 per cent in 2050.

In contrast, Africa and Asia had only around 16 per cent of people living in urban areas in the first reported year. Then, the data for these parts of the world experienced a gradual increase to 37 and 41 per cent, respectively. Forcast shows that the fraction of individuals in cities in 2050 will be 62 per cent in Africa and almost two thirds in Asia.
