The chart and table below give information about population figures in Japan.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart and the graph display data about the number of Japanese inhabitants.

Overall, the population, after a gradual increment, is starting to decrease and it is predicted that this downward trend will continue also in the future, with a steep rise in the percentage of over 65.

Looking at the first graph, it is noticeable that the toll has grown from 84.1 to 127.8 milions, experiencing an increase of a half of the initial value, over the first 55 years reported. However, this gradual upward trend was interrupted in 2010, when the population has begun to decrease. A slight fall was experienced also in 2015, when it reached the value of 125.4, but the drop is expected to be more dramatic in the future, with a predicted decrease of 35.5 units in the years between 2015 and 2035.

Moving to the second graph, it is noticeable that the proportion of people who are older than 65 years old has always been increasing and it is predicted to continue its growth even in the future. In fact, it started at 4.9 per cent in 1950 to quadrupling in 2005, when it reached the 20 per cent, and it is expected to double again up to 2055.
