In general, it can be seen that the percentage of women aged under 30 having their first child dropped, while those aged over 30 saw increases. 30-to-34-year-old women made up the largest percentage of the women giving birth to their first child.
Turning to the chart for details, in 1966 people who were aged 19-24 accounted for 62% of the total number of women having their first child, compared to 36% of those aged 25-30. In the next 40 years, the 19-to-24-year-olds recorded a dramatic decrease to 28% in its proportion of the first-time mothers, while those fell into 25-30 age group increased significantly to 50% before falling suddenly to 38% in 2006. Likewise, the percentage of women aged under 19 giving birth to their first child dropped considerably from 34% to 12% during the period shown.
In terms of the remaining age groups, the 30-to-34-year-olds took up 12% of total number of first-time mothers in 1966, in comparison with 2% of those aged over 40. Over the following 40 years, the 30-34 age group saw a enormous rise to 45% of women giving birth to their first child, while those aged over 40 grew slightly to 4% after dropping a bit (1%) in 1986. Similarly, the percentage of people who fell into 34-39 age bracket first-time mothers climbed dramtically from 8% to 30% during that time.
