The bar chart illustrates how average families spent their weekly income in one country in 1968 and 2018.
Overall, the proportion of expenditure on food was the largest in the initial year. However, it had been overtaken by housing and leisure in the final year.
In 1968, families spent almost 35% of their income on food, but this figure decreased by almost half to around 16% in 2018. In 1968, the percentage of any of the remaining catergories never reached 10%. However, housing and leisure both increased significantly, replacing food as the largest expensen with approximately 19% and 22%.
Expenditure of transport also rose, to almost 15% of weekly income in 2018, while money spent on household goods remained at 7%.Moreover, fuel and power, clothing and footware and persional goods all reduced to not more than 5% of weekly income.
