Males and females, unable to read and write, constituted practically 0% in developed countries, while the proportions for Latin America were higher, 10% and 11% respectively, with a very small gap between men and women. In East Asia, the figure for males nearly doubled that of Carribean, standing at 20%, while females accounted for approximately 8%.
On the other hand, the rates of unschooled people in Sub-Saharan Africa were 30% and 48% respectively for men and women. A rough similar proportion was seen in Arab States, where the figure for females almost doubled that for males, 52% and 28% respectively. The highest rate of illiteracy could be found in South Asia, where 55% women and 33% men were uneducated.
To sum up, the world uneducation rates in developing nations were considerably high and the number of unlettered females was ahead of that of unschooled males in all regions.
