The bar chart illustrates the changes of average expenditures on building a house in five major cities over the 13-years period compared with the average cost in 1989. Overall, besides Frankfurt, the housing price in other four cities experienced an upward trend throughout the surveyed period.
To be more specific, during 1990 to 1995, London and Toyko had relatively low house cost as they both dropped 7% from the original prices. New York also decreased its house price by 5%, whereas the price in Madrid and Frankfurt were slightly higher than that in 1989, which rose 1% and 2% respectively.
As for the period of 1996-2000, more cities had a higher price figure when compared with the average house price in 1989. The biggest change happened in London, where the price went up by 11%. Similar change also can be viewed in New York and Madrid, with the increase of 5% and 4% respectively. The house price in Tokyo was 5% lower than its counterpart in 1989, while the cost to buy a house in Frankfurt almost kept stable during the measured period.
