The line chart illustrates the percentage of the Japanese population in different age groups from 1960 until now, and projection for the year 2040.
Looking at the graph, it is immediately obvious that 25 - 64 years old group was the highest in all period shown. On the other hand, residents in this country more and more ageing, the opposite was true with both remaining communities.
In 1960, about 65% of people living in Japan between the ages of 15 and 64, more than doubled that of 0-14 old group, at exactly 30%. In 1970, the number of citizens from 15 to 64 old increased by about 5% to almost 70% and remained fairly unchanged through the three decades ensuing before falling to around 60% in 2019. This figure is predicted to experience a fall to 55% in 2030 and finally will constitute roughly 58% of the total population of Japan in 2040. The data for those aged 0-14 follow a somewhat similar pattern, which is estimated to drop to about 10% in 2040 after had a slight increase to approximately 35% in 1970.
Regarding the other group, the proportion of Japanese people aged 65 and over was only 5% in 1960. However, the figures witnessed a significant growth to nearly 30% in 2020 and it is forecast that about around 35% of Japan's people will fall into this group.
