The line chart compares the population of Japan by three age groups from 1960 and predictions to 2040.
Overall, the number of people aged 15-64 accounts for a high proportion of Japan’s population while the number of old people is increasing over period time.
According the statistics, Japan’population still tends to age because the proportion of elder people is increasing. From 1960 to 2000, the percentage of elder people increased slightly about 10%. But between 2000 and 2020, it increased 2-fold from 15% in 2000 to 30% in 2020.As predicted, the number of elderly continues to increase but not significantly and hit the highest point at 35%, the highest level in 80 years.
Contrary to the proportion of the elderly, the number of people aged 15-64 and 0-14 tended to decrease. From 1960 to 2010, the percentage of people aged 15-64 kept at a stable level about 65%.After that, it tended to decrease continously. As forecast, it will decline to 2030 and hit the lowest point at about 55%- the lowest level in 70 years.At the same period time, the number of children also plummeted. In the first 10 years from 1960-1970, the percentage of people aged 1-14 grown slightly. But 50 years later, the proportion of children fell by 25% from 35% in 1970 to 10% in 2020. It will have a downward trend in the next 20 years.
