The diagram compares the number of Britain part-time and full-time students in higher education in three periods, classified by their gender. Overall, full-time scholars were significantly outnumbered by part-time ones and among those people who chose to study part-time, there were more men than women in two out of three periods.
To begin with, part-time enrollment witnessed an upward trend in the number of female students over the time frame, while the number of male students followed an unstable pattern. Indeed, there were 1000 male scholars during 1970-1971 but after 10 years, this figure slipped to about 850, following by a slight increase in the next period and stood at around 900. In contrast, the number of female scholars started at 700 then gradually climbed up to 800 in 10-year period and finally landed at 1100.
In addition, over the periods, more men and women chose to enrol in full-time education, from nearly 100 thousand men and 50 thousand women in 1970/71 to approximately double the number of men and quadruple the number of women after 20 years.
