The graph illustrates the percentages of Australians born in other countries between 1976 and 2011.
In general, the percentage of Australian people who were born abroad fluctuated significantly over the measured period. Additionally, while the percentage of Australians born in Asia rose over the period, the percentage born in the UK declined steadily.
In 1976, the percentage of UK born Australians was about 14%, which was almost three times higher than the figure of those born in Asia. Over the following 15 years, the percentage of Australians born in the UK fell to 5%, while those born in Asia rose steadily to around 15%. Meanwhile, the figures for Australians born in other regions fluctuated significantly over the period, however rose overall to around 13% in 2011.Figures for all Australians born abroad fluctuated over the 35 year period beginning at around 29% in 1976, decreasing to around 23% during the late eighties and early nineties, whilst increasing back up to around 32% by 2011.
