The chart below shows the percentage of difference in income between men and women form 1978 to 2008
The line graph illustrates the income gap between males and females in five nations from 1978 to 2008.
Overall, it is apparent that the proportion of difference in earnings between men and women in the countries witnessed a decreasing trend for most of the period. However, the gap in Australia improved substantially after 1998.
Commencing at 50 per cent in 1978 as the first place, the difference percentage in income between genders in Japan went down gradually by 10 per cent in 2018. Similarly, the period of 1978-2008 experienced a minimal reduction in the earning difference between males and females from 30 per cent to 28 per cent in the US.
In UK and France, the income gap also fell with the same pace over the 30 years. Between 1978 and 2008, there was a slight drop by 3 per cent from 29 per cent and 20 per cent in UK and France, respectively. Whereas, beginning at 19 per cent, the earnings inequality by genders in Australia remained relatively steady until 1998 at approximately 18 per cent before rocketing rapidly to its peak at 14 per cent in the next 10 years.
