Overall, during the first half of the period, more rented houses than owned houses were chosen while an opposite trend was observed over the final 30 years.
In 1918, nearly four times the proportion of people lived in rented houses as much as in their owned houses. The figure for hired accommodation slightly decreased and stayed unchanged at nearly 70% while possessing accommodation had a gradual increase before being stable in 1930 and 1953. Households who accommodated in owned houses accounted for 20% less than in rented houses before both figures recorded 50%.
During the next ten years, the number of possessed homes had a dramatic increase and outlooked renting houses. It continued rising and reaching a peak of nearly 70% before dropping by 6% in 2011. The percentage of households renting homes had a gradual decline from 30% but a small rise of 5% in the last period.
