This diagram indicates the proportion of families owning and renting places to live in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Before 1971, the percentage of households in owned accommodation surpassed that of households in rented accommodation and the gap between them reached a peak in 1981. Then, the gap was constantly narrowed from 55% in 1918 to 0 in 1971, excluding a levelling off from 1939 to 1953.
After 1971, there were more families in rented places than in owned places. In 1991 and 2001, the proportion of the former was almost twice as big as that of the latter and the gap rose to a peak of 40%. However, the gap then showed a slight decline to 30% in 2011 because of a marginal decrease in the proportion of households in owned accommodation and a minimal rise in the proportion of households renting accommodation.
In conclusion, it is clear that the general trend of households in owned accommodation was upward, while that of households in rented accommodation was downward.
