The bar graph compares the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the majority of household was in rented accommodation from 1918 to 1971. In 1971, both of accommodation type had the same percentage and then, household in owned accommodation replaced with renting, to become the most usual accommodation.
At the beginning of the period, renting was much more common than owning with just under 80%. Then, the amount of household in rented accommodation remained stable between 1939 to 1953 with under 70%. After that term, renting had showed a downward trend by almost the end of the period and it dropped to under 40%.
In contrast, the proportion of households in owned accommodation was the lowest in 1918 with over 20%. Then, the figure of owning remained as the same between 1939 and 1953 with increasing to just over 30%. However, owning a house showed an upward trend to around the end of the term. The value of owning reached to a peak in 2001 with just under 70% before dropped to almost 65% in 2011.
