The graph illustrates the percentage of households owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. The proportion between owning and renting has changed drastically during past 93 years.
While the percentage of households in owned accommodation has increased from roughly 22% in 1918 to 68% in 2001, the percentage of households in rented accommodation has decreased from 78% in 1918 to 32% in 2001. These trends of increasing and decreasing appear in every time points from 1918 until 2001 except in the years between 1939 and 1953. Between 1939 and 1953, both percentages stay at the same level.
In 1971, the percentage of households in both owned accommodation and rented accommodation is equal at 50%.
However, the trend was shifted in 2011. After almost a century of a growing trend, the percentage of households in owned accommodation drops by 4% in 2011, resulting in 62% of households in owned accommodation and 38% of households in rented accommodation.
